Betsy Stirratt, a native of New Orleans, is the Founding Director of the Grunwald Gallery of Art at Indiana University in Bloomington, USA. As Director she has curated numerous exhibitions including Personal: Selections from the Robert J. Shiffler Collection, Human Nature, Perform Media, and The Miniature. She has edited several books and catalogs, including [Re]Imagining Science, Indiana University Press (2017), Framing Beauty: Intimate Visions, Grunwald Gallery, Indiana University (2017), Human Nature, School of Fine Arts Gallery, Indiana University (2007), Les Vérités du Sexe, Editions Marval, Paris, France (French, German editions, 2003) and Feminine Persuasion: Contemporary Women’s Sexuality, Indiana University Press, Bloomington, IN (2003). As an artist, her practice includes paintings, books, photographs, objects, and installations, focusing on themes about nature and the natural order. Exhibiting widely since 1983, solo exhibitions include La Maladie at The Mütter Museum in Philadelphia and the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago; Regimes of [dis]order at De Pauw University, and Nature Morte at the Workingmen’s Institute in New Harmony Indiana among others in museums and galleries across the Midwest. Her work has been included in group exhibits at the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington, Indianapolis Museum of Art, and White Columns and Art in General in New York among many others. She is the recipient of Visual Artist Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and awards from the Indiana Arts Commission and the American Craft Council. She lives part-time in Westport Ireland. Statement: Through documentation and fabrication, I make photographs, installations, objects, paintings, and videos that examine nature and the natural order. I am interested in how organisms, plants, animals, and humans, are represented in texts and museum settings, and how we preserve, classify, and display them.
