Tori Tinsley (b. 1980) received her BFA from the University of Michigan School of Art & Design, her MAAT from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and her MFA from Georgia State University. Tori is a recipient of a 2016 Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters and Sculptors Grant, a 2016 City of Atlanta Emerging Artist Award, a City of Atlanta Artist Project Grant, and a 2015 Idea Capital Grant. She is also a 2016-17 Wathall Fellow and a founding member of Atlanta-based Day & Night Projects and Doppler Projects. At the moment, she is planning three solo exhibitions in Atlanta and one for Sweet Lorraine Gallery in Brooklyn, NY. Statement Through the interaction of two figures, Tinsley's paintings often convey the emotional layers surrounding difficult relationships. In reflecting on her childhood, Tinsley recalled the idiom "bread and butter". When encountering obstacles in their path, couples sometimes utter this phrase to ward off future separation. Tinsley's Bread & Butter paintings serve as the artist's emotional sustenance and also poke at the notion of these same paintings operating as tradable commodity.
