Corrie Parker McCallum was born in Sumter, South Carolina 1914 and died March 2, 2009 in Charleston. She studied at the University of South Carolina and the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. She married fellow artist William Halsey with whom she had three children. She was a consummate artist, teacher and arts’ advocate as the WPA Director of Art Project in Columbia, SC in 1935. She taught children’s art classes at the Boston Museum School while attending school in Boston in 1938 , was assistant to the Director of The Telfair Academy of Arts & Sciences Savannah, GA in 1943, and co-founder of & teacher at The Charleston Art School in 1945. The Charleston Art School became the Gibbes Museum Studio of Art. She initiated the art department’s printmaking program College of Charleston and was Curator of Art Education for the Gibbes Art Gallery, Charleston, from 1959-68. Her work was shown widely in South Carolina and Georgia with shows at the Gibbes Museum, The Telfair and pieces in many of the State Museum’s shows.
