I aim to capture the sweet awkwardness of the human condition. My medium is oil paint on wood. With nothing planned in advance, I move paint around on a wood surface. In the blotches of color applied, I may see an eye or a mouth that I work to pull from the abstract and begin defining into a figure, all along asking myself "what makes this person interesting?". I react to what I see happening on the canvas verses sketching out an idea first. This allows for happy accidents or a direction I couldn't have foreseen. I love stepping back from a completed painting wondering, "where did you come from?". I want my paintings to...make you laugh, make you feel guilty for laughing, stay with you when you leave. I want you to...see the face of your neighbor in my work, see reflections of yourself in my work, see our common humanity in my work. We need to laugh at ourselves a whole lot more, because we are all awkward and imperfect, and dammit... that's okay!
