Karl was born in Columbus, Ohio, and was raised in the southwest part of the state. College, medical school, and residency were completed at The Ohio State University. He moved to Kalispell, Montana, in 1983, where he practiced medicine (otolaryngology) until 2020 when he retired. He feels very fortunate to live in the beautiful Flathead Valley and close to Glacier National Park.Karl was introduced to oil painting by Mark Ogle and has studied with Rob Akey, Denae Wiemer, Denise Gilroy, Matt Smith, and Linda Glover Gooch, as well as many online courses.In creating his works with oil, paints, Karl strives to combine transparent passages with opaque passages, as well as areas of thicker and thinner paint. He celebrates the beauty of the natural world, aiming to convey this appreciation to those who observe his work.Karl has participated in many plein air paint-outs through the Hockaday Museum of Art in Kalispell, as well as exhibiting in the Hockaday Museum's Member Salon.
