My work is primarily visual journaling - a way to process life and thoughts. Charcoal allows for a more direct and forgiving translation from thought to mark-making over other mediums. The less procedural barriers between a thought and the artwork, the better. I categorize my work into two general spaces: 1. Reactions - Experiences, places, or things I find interesting with little to no conceptual emphasis – a quick, unfiltered, direct response of a notable memory or neat object. Drawing for drawings sake. 2. Intentions - Layered themes rooted in my personal interests of philosophy, environmentalism, biology, neurology, and the construction of the “Self.” An exploration and confrontation of the solipsistic tendencies of human perception, challenging the egotistical notion of superiority over the natural world. We are part of and equal to it. These drawings are reflections of my interests, serving to both personally process information and hopefully carry thoughts and dialogues to more folks. Those quick, thoughtless “reactions” and deeper, nuanced “intentions” are essential parts to our lived experience. We carry contradictory complexities within ourselves, and I hope to be able to capture these degrees of nuance. Life happens in the gray, as much as we desire to taxonomize and separate the world into black and white.
