Michael Mancarella has honed his craft to such a dynamic level that he makes wood and steel appear animated. There is a playful excitement to the juxtaposition of materials that conveys buoyancy. Mancarella’s sculptures share his deep appreciation for work that impacts and transforms its environment. The work is both gravity defying and wondrous. Michael is clearly inspired to create dimensional work meant for interaction in public spaces.Mancarella’s reverence for using re-purposed materials is evident in how he treats each piece as a cherished object. His sculptures share evidence of thoughtful intent; a genuine reflection of his evolution as he combines disparate materials, carving order out of chaos. Light, texture and long shadows are vital to this relationship. Michael’s approach of starting with a loose sketch makes room for the condition of humanity as it converges with the surrounding environment.Mancarella holds a BFA from University of Colorado, Denver. He co-founded Ironton Studios and Gallery in 1998 and spent the next 18 years developing an artists’ collective, art gallery and outdoor art space.
