“I want to bring serenity and peacefulness into your space.” Carolyn Johnson loves the ocean. Her passion fuels her artistry, driving her to create beautiful, eco-conscious works celebrating the sea. Coastal Art is created on art panel and recycled surfboards. Carolyn creates one-of-a-kind, mixed-media art, crafted to allow you to see “into” the layers below with her self developed techniques. She starts by taking surfboards destined for landfill – and then Recycles, Upcycles, and Repurposes those boards into beautiful wall art. After transforming the boards from water-faring vessels into blank canvases (a laborious process which includes scraping wax and dirt, filling holes, sanding, and priming), the real transformation begins. Using specialized methods, Carolyn incorporates ink blends, acrylics, metallics, and resin onto the boards – all in different layers – creating emotive, textural, dimensional depictions of the ocean and coastline. Looking at a finished board is like looking into the sea itself. And, like the sea, Carolyn’s boards are a beautiful reminder of the power of reinvention. She reflects that, “just as we change in our own lives, to think about the many journeys each board has taken is very parallel. My recycled surfboards are now on a new journey - as wall art.” AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS2021 Balboa Island Artwalk–Mayor’s Award “Best of Show” 2019 Balboa Island Artwalk-Kudos Magazine “Best of Show” 2019 Surfers Healing–Ritz-Carlton-Auction Benefit-Highest Bid2019 LaJolla Art & Wine Festival-Featured Artist2019 AIA ArtwalkSpecial Citation Award-Surfboard “Perfect Peace” 2018 Mission Federal Artwalk–Featured Recycled Surfboard “Awaken”2018 Surfboard-Metallic, Acrylic, Ink Blend, Resin - proprietary technique 2018 FOA Designer Art Fashion Show “Theme” Winner 2017 Indian Wells Arts Festival-Featured Artist 2018 Mission Federal ArtWalk, Little Italy San Diego CA-Featured Artist
