Stephan Hoffpauir’s photorealistic watercolors invite viewers to contemplate spaces that, while familiar, are largely ignored by those who fleetingly pass through them. Among his subjects are quasi-urban and quintessentially American spaces with an inherently surreal quality, including architecture, restaurant vignettes, and more recently, suburban supermarket displays. Employing but reinterpreting the traditions of Spanish and Dutch still-life painting, these contemporary works represent an ongoing exploration of the ways in which our surroundings shape our modern lives.
