Malene Heerup was born into a family filled with Danish and internationally renowned artists and grew up with an innate ability to observe subtext, details, and motifs. Heerup found her own artistic identity while living in New York City and attending Parsons School of Design. Heerup’s work is inspired from a subconscious state where her observations are moulded by joy, humor, imagination, and a desire to communicate. Comprised of amorphous forms, surprising juxtapositions, and unexpected meetings, Heerup’s work tell a story in a cacophony of color. Her inspirations are wide ranging, from New York’s street art, fashion illustrations, and theater set design to florals, modern dance, and abstract surrealism. Heerup has been featured in a variety of international publications and created scenographic art for film and live performances. Her work has been exhibited internationally in New York City, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Copenhagen, Venice, Rome, Antwerpen, Gent, Luxembourg, Austin, Milano, and Miami, among others.
