Since 2005, Maria Burtis has made one small piece of art every day. Burtis collects bits of visual information and experiments with different media and subject matter in these daily sketches. Along the way Burtis has kept a blog of these paintings, now totaling close to 3600 works. Burtis’ larger paintings are natural outgrowths of this obsessive and committed ritual. Her subject matter references the natural world and the relationship of the external landscape of Northern California to the landscape of internal emotions. Her fascination is in the liminal spaces; exploring deeply the edges where physical matter, relationships and even emotions, collide. Where do air and water and earth meet? And how do you measure and visually describe the space between two people, thoughts or emotions? Through gestured strokes and expressive color Burtis seeks to capture this mystery and create a somatic and emotional response from the viewer. Maria Burtis graduated from Carleton College in 1991 and Massachusetts College of Art in 2000. Her work has been widely shown in California and nationally. She lives and maintains her studio practice in San Francisco.
