Andy Harris is an artist based in Norfolk, Virginia and holds a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University. I record local architecture, storefronts and suburban homes, while interrogating the landscapes and detritus of late-capitalism. In focusing on architecture, nature, and objects around me, I’m memorializing the intersection of time, place, and commerce, and how goods and services create our landmarks and sense of place. By using collage, I combine artistic will with chance to create artifacts that make the familiar seem slightly uncanny or de-familiarized. The labor-intensive nature of the collages I create pull from my many years of experience as a wallpaper installer. The hand tools and methods I once used to transform interior settings through hanging wallpaper have evolved into an expressive and experimental path of art making.
