The legendary and beloved Selina Trieff has been represented by the Berta Walker Gallery since it opened. She studied with Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts, and remained a cherished outer Cape artist throughout her life. Over the centuries, great portrait painters have succeeded at reflecting more than just a particular face, but rather the face of the human condition. In the tradition of Jean-Antoine Watteau and Diego Velasquez, Trieff's paintings of faces and figures belie a profound understanding of the whimsy and mystery of being human. Her often autobiographical gold-leaf and oil portraits of figures create a riveting tension between the past and the present, joy and melancholy, male and female, and animal and human.
