Although the inspiration for many of my works still revolves centrally around pets, my approach is evolving. I still love creating ‘stories’ involving pets, sometimes with their humans, sometimes with other pets, stories that frequently show glimpses of humor, intimacy, psychology, emotions, and mood. Drawing as a principal feature of my works is becoming more important, along with exploring contemporary drawing media. At age seventy-two, I feel like a kid again, eager to shake things up, and explore new approaches to comfortable themes, becoming more abstract and loose in media manipulation; less pondering, more free-wheeling and mischievously less complex and self-important! Wendy Slaton lives with her husband, Joe; their rescue pup, Tucker; and three stray cats -– Mister Pop, Tuff-Tuff, Shadow-Shadow, and newcomer kitten, Squiggles – in far Western North Carolina. The pets of friends, the psychology between pets and their owners, and sometimes other pets, and intimate interiors featuring pets remain the bedrock of her inspiration, with occasional excursions into her garden, the landscape of western North Carolina, emotions, and politics as subject matter.
