James Penfield is a Minneapolis based artist represented by Gallery Mar in Park City,UT and Horizon Fine Art in Jackson Hole, WY. His work explores aspects of perception, philosophy, futurism and environmentalism, but is rooted in the representation of theconcepts we attribute to our idea of nature.Nature is the multi faceted conceptual force manifested by cycling life as far as we camsee. But we are bound to only see a fragment of this process, We’re constantly movingtowards furthering our understanding of this, exploring into space and inward to thequantum world. Creativity plus construction can advance this force freely regardless ofcontext, and find conviction in this in order to transcend non functional modes ofdivision.Growing up around creatives in his family, drawing and snowboarding in the midwest inthe 90’s, Penfield took many influential trips out west to the Rockies and eventuallyended up pursuing college in CO to study art and to snowboard. Following a heavycrash at Keystone that left him down and out, he returned home and started up again, this time studying Art History and intaglio printmaking at Hemline University in St. Paul,MN.After graduating, Penfield pursued intaglio printmaking independently, traveling to thewest coast to visit and meet with different shops and printmakers. Eventually findinghimself temp. working in San Francisco and not much printmaking but lots of art seeing,he returned home once again.Inspired more by the west coast landscapes and art/design worlds, he started to showand design more work in MN, printing at Highpoint Center for Printmaking and workingwith other independent creatives in the music scene there. After doing this for a fewyears it was time to move again, this time to NYC to pursue a graphic design educationin the city that never sleeps. This allowed him to intern with Vice Media in Brooklyn as agraphic designer, exposing him to a larger international world that exists in art anddesign. After completing the internship, getting the degree and working as a freelancedesigner and screen printer in NYC, back to Minneapolis near Cedar Lake where helives and works now.The galleries Penfield works with represent the locations or regions that inspired andstill inspire him as points of inspiration and perpetual energy to generate travel andexperiences that can be relayed through his work at the gallery in the location ofinspiration.
