Kim Hutchison (she/her) is a mixed media artist inspired by the investigation of found objects and materials in relationship to the spaces these objects inhabited aside the individuals who possessed them. These items bear witness to a life lived. Most often, common objects become focal subject matter, finding fascination in the story that is untold, even in the most common terms. Within the context of these items there exists a path, which acknowledges our shared human existence and the opportunity to embrace impermanence. In most recent works Kim has turned the lens inward, dwelling, examining, and shifting perspective on a quilt made for her at the age of 5, in 1977 by her mother from worn family clothing. In this series, the quilt as an object; creates space for looking back to process family traumas and promote healing. The quilt becomes a tool to the past, used to excavate the energies held within, allowing for opening, compassion, and forgiveness. Kim Hutchison was born in Winterset, IA holds a B.A. from Grandview University, and currently resides in Des Moines, IA with her partner and multiple adopted animals.
