In high school, Pete Ramberg entered a picture contest and won first place with a picture of his dog. After shooting for fun on vacations with his family, Ramberg realized he really enjoyed the art form. While he kept photography as a hobby, Ramberg taught for years at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. In 1994, Ramberg decided he wanted to quit teaching and pursue landscape photography as a career. What made Ramberg so interested in his photos was his knowledge of light. He has a science background in physics which helped him realize that photography is not about capturing a scene – it’s about capturing the scene in great light. Ramberg looked at it in a scientific way and realized that “photo” means light, so photography literally is the study of light. This was his Eureka moment and his goal was to capture a landscape in the best light possible. It’s a goal that keeps him shooting a scene over and over until he gets it just right.
