Painting on raw canvas is direct, pure, and challenging. Extremely conscious and confident with every brushstroke, painting mirrors my life as a badass cancer warrior. In late 2013, I was diagnosed with Stage IV oral cancer. I had never smoked, and was otherwise relatively healthy. I lost my entire tongue and 66 lymph nodes. Speaking clearly has become a challenge. I take all food and drink through a stomach feeding tube, but I'm still cancer free. I now consider my cancer a gift, pushing me to find the courage to express myself more honestly and boldly. My work is influenced by Helen Frankenthaler and Rex Ray, and the mentorship of Nicholas Simmons. Working with acrylic on raw canvas is the most technically challenging process I've ever encountered. My paintings express my love of life. I feel like I have finally found my true voice.
