Born August 4, 1926 in Valencia, state of Carabobo, his father was a physician and his mother a direct descendant of Arturo Michelena's. As a child, living in Puerto Cabello and Valencia, he carries out his first works, which he sends to a salon for illustrators of poems at the Valencia Athenaeum, receiving his first award in 1942. The same Athenaeum presents his introductory exhibition in 1943. In 1945 he registers in the medical school at the Universidad de Los Andes, Mérida. In 1949 he moves to Caracas to finish medical school. He becomes a frequent visitor of the Free Art Workshop and begins to actively participate in the artistic movement of the time. In 1952 he is granted the Arturo Michelena award from the Valencia Athenaeum and the National Prize of the Arts, along with a scholarship which allows him to settle down in Paris. Back in Venezuela in 1957, he returns to Paris in 1959 as cultural attaché of the Venezuelan Embassy. In 1962 he participates in the Venice Biennial in representation of his country. In 1990 a retrospective of his work from 1942 to 1990 is shown at Caracas' MACCSI.
