Kit Reuther is a self-taught painter and sculptor. Her paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the United States. She has received fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the VCCA International Residency Program in Germany, and the Contemporary Artists Center Residency in Massachusetts. Reuther has multiple pieces in permanent collections including the Tennessee State Museum, the BellSouth Building in Tennessee, the Tennessee Senatorial Office in Washington D.C., and multiple Nordstrom locations (Hawaii, Toronto, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, and Nashville). She currently works and resides in Nashville, Tennessee. In recent work , Reuther has been playing with unconventional composition: often pushing subjects to the edges and allowing a field of white, or negative, space to counterbalance the weighted perimeters. Shapes are ever-evolving and becoming more geometric and formal, without being cold and hard-edged. She continues to want to see evidence of her hand at work across the surface of the canvas. Her wood sculptures are a combination of both found and manipulated materials. Reuther tends to “soften” hard surfaces with organic shapes that allow the work to fall somewhere between minimal modernism and the occasional figurative reference. In 2014, she began to design new 3-dimensional work for metal fabrication. The limitations of sheet metal have been a strong influence in how she sees and thinks about shapes going forward.
