Donald Baechler has been referred to as a "second generation" pop artist. Through his mixed media compositions, the artist combines pop images with his unique painting style, reflecting on different periods in art history in a singular work of art. Source material reflects upon contemporary, folk, classical, pop culture and childhood. The artist's early work has been noted for taking on a childlike persona, while his later works evolved into multimedia pieces which worked to convey the idea of the modern day adult through the use of pop imagery. Baechler was first represented by the same art dealer who was famous for discovering Basquiat and Keith Haring, Tony Shafrazi. The artist is known as being one of the most influential "discoveries" of the internationally renowned dealer. However, the artist himself didn't identify with the style of the other conceptual artists with connections to Shafrazi such as Harring and Kenny Scharf. ‘I'm an abstract artist before anything else,' For me, it's always been more about line, form, balance and the edge of the canvas—all these silly formalist concerns—than it has been about subject matter or narrative or politics."- Baechler on his own artistic style The artist's work displays kitsch and pop imagery. These multimedia creations are comprised of a number of materials such as, playing cards, maps, toys and other common items which evoke a whimsical and childlike appropriation. "I hold onto absolutely everything, I would guess out of every thousand images I save, I probably use one or two. I've never actually counted. I save images in many different forms; I save them in endless file cabinets. I have slide binders with thousands and thousands of slides that I work from. But most of the things I photograph never find their way into a painting; and most of the things I save and catalog and photocopy never really find their way into a work. It's necessary to accumulate all of these things to get to the point of what's important."-Baechler The artist works in a number of ways, including painting, mixed media and sculpture. One can obtain the opportunity of visiting the work of the Donald Baechler by visiting one of his numerous exhibitions, which occur internationally. Recent exhibitions have been held in Aspen, Paris and New York City.
