"One either stands on shifting sands, or swims." Stan Berning is a resident of Santa Fe. He is a former gallery owner, teacher, author and print maker and considered himself an antique when he was born in 1951. Stan lives by a reminder of his 80 year old friend: His generation made sure everything had been done. Because of this, Stan has proceeded to do everything in each painting. Accepting that the act of working in paint will result in the echo of a vaguely familiar imagery from past painters, released Stan from the tyrannical demand for newness, ironically opening the process to a multitude of possibilities embodied in each individual painting. If it has all been done before, there is no territory worth defending -- One either stands on shifting sands, or swims. EDUCATION Stan audited classes at Oberin College and Earlham College. His real education started upon his arrival in Santa Fe, where he had the opportunity to meet and work with some of the best artist n the country. Stan professes that ther is no such thing as a self taught artist, he has had great teachers at every step along the way.
