I am more interested in responding to my subjects rather than producing representations of them. A gestural stroke, whether the subject is physically in front of me or in my memory allows me to capture the experience rather than an image. Movement, form, mood, light,, space, line, and color capture my imagination which make all my paintings intuitive, whether they are landscape, still life, portrait, or abstract. Having been born in Mississippi and grown up in the South, nature is central to my work. The Mississippi Gulf Coast, the woodlands, and creeks, the floral abundance of the gardens inspire my personal imagery. Today the gardens my husband has created, the pond behind our house and the woods surrounding it provide my own private sanctuary, complete with raccoons, frogs, deer, and all manner of wild birds My place is sacred to me. The quiet is punctuated by sounds of rain and creatures. It’s a spiritual habitat that I hope I share in my paintings.
