From 1977 - 1984, Debbie Carfagno was the Master Serigrapher for Andy Warhol. She worked exclusively producing all prints on paper in conjunction with Rupert Jasen Smith and oversaw the entire process from image building, paper and ink choices, screen production, and printing. She trained subsequent apprentice printers and also produced limited editions for Keith Haring, John Lennon, Francesco Scavullo, James Rosenquist, Kenny Scharf and others. Some well-known Warhol editions produced during this time were “Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century”, 1980, “Shoes”, 1980, “Myths”, 1981, “Dollar Signs”, 1982, “Endangered Species”, 1983, and “Ads”, 1984.Carfagno received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in 1976 and served as Adjunct Professor within the printmaking Department, with an emphasis on serigraphy. She then worked as a Serigrapher at Styria Studios, Long Island City, NY primarily working with Leroy Neiman. The experience working with the highest echelons of artists gave her the desire to create her own works andtrained her to break down the structure of an image into outlines and contours, as is necessary when creating the numerous layers of a serigraph print.. Since leaving Warhol's employ in 1984, Carfagno has worked as an artist creating her own works. Her imagery derives from the infinite perfection of nature, as arranged by the artist or in its natural state. Carfagno renders her images in reduced lines and shapes whose meaning is defined by the negative space surrounding them. She draws, then cuts out arrangements first in paper, then in aluminum. The designs become pure form, to be further defined by oil paint applied once powder coated or created in polished stainless steel. She strives to create a dialogue between the compositions and the colors in order to add dimension to the flat metal. In multi layered works, Carfagno uses the space between the layers to further play with the illusion of depth. Sometimes her palette is muted and harmonious; at other times it is bold and highly contrasted. The new series, Twelve Flowers, is Carfagno's first polished stainless steel edition. While further refining bouquet arrangements of Twelve Tulips, Twelve Lilies, and Twelve Roses, these sculptures need not be limited by color, instead reflecting and absorbing whatever surrounds them. Both surfaces possess equally commanding compositions. The works mean to clarify that which is complicated, while at the same time conveying an engaging universal representation.Selected Exhibition:2014-2018 Williams McCall Gallery, Miami Beach2010-2018 Adamar Fine Art, Miami, Florida, Art Hamptons, Art Palm Beach, Art Miami, Art Palm Springs, Art Boca Raton, SOFA Chicago2015 Solo exhibition, Hamilton Selway Fine Art , Los Angeles2000-2009 Opera Gallery Miami, Opera Gallery London, Opera Gallery Paris, Opera Gallery Singapore2004 Lennox Gallery, Palm Beach Contemporary, Palm Beach, Florida2003 Nan Miller Gallery, Art Expo, NYC2002 Solo exhibition, Artmosphere Gallery, Graz, Austria2002 “Mirror, Mirror”, Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, Miami, Florida2000 Solo exhibition Bettcher Gallery, Miami, Florida1998 Solo exhibition, Greene & Greene Gallery, Lambertville, New Jersey Selected Corporate Commissions:2003 Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Serenade of the Seas2002 Mandel and Mandel, Dupont Building, Miami, Florida
